Your View 8/23: Thanks for support from MoDOT

Friday, August 23, 2002

I would like to thank you for lending the Sikeston Standard Democrat's support to Proposition B.

It's difficult to come out in favor of a tax increase. Yet, you recognized the return on investment for taxpayers would come in the form of increased safety, economic development and convenience.

As I've said, I'm disappointed that the measure did not pass, but I respect the opinion of the voters. Still, the need for increased investment remains. On our part, MoDOT will work with the Legislature to explore funding options that might be more agreeable to Missouri citizens. In the meantime, we will concentrate our efforts on maintaining Missouri's existing transportation assets.

Missourians deserve a better transportation system of highways, transit, waterways, railroads and bicycle and pedestrian systems than currently exists. I pledge that I will work to find a way to give it to them. I hope that you will continue to keep your readers informed of our progress.

Sincerely,

Henry Hungerbeeler, director Missouri Department of Transportation
