Workshop covers commodities, risk management

Tuesday, November 5, 2002

SIKESTON - An upcoming workshop will provide area residents with information about risk management, crop insurance, the new farm bill and overall trading in the commodities market.

Howard L. Sorkin, owner/principal of the Commodity Learning Institute in Chicago, Ill., will present the ag meeting and workshop from 4-6:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Malone Street Grill in Sikeston. There is no charge to attend the workshop.

Rita Degen with Wesbecher Business Solutions Consulting said the meeting is designed for representatives from financial institutions, CPAs, brokers, financial planners, retirement planners, ag businessmen, local farmers and educators.

During the meeting, Sorkin will cover day trading opportunities, financial planning and retirement planning.

Degen said he will also seek feedback about bringing a commodity training institute to the area. Currently only two such training institutes exist in the United States.

A third generation member of the Chicago Board of Trade, Sorkin started at the Mid-America Commodity Exchange in 1974, then moved to the COT as an associate member in the new Financial Instruments Division of the exchange in 1977. After 20 years in the "pits," Sorkin became a market maker of the Chicago Stock Exchange.

Sorkin was one of the first local traders in the U.S. Treasury bond pit and has been a local or floor broker in bonds, bond options, the treasury note complex (two-year, five-year and 10-year), stock index futures, metals and grains.

Over the past 10 years, Sorkin has taught students, professional educators and business professionals about the markets, market practices and risk management. He has lectured worldwide for private companies and as a representative of the Chicago Board of Trade.

For the past several years he has lectured on investment markets and retirement planning for the Certified Financial Planning Program and Loyola University in Chicago and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill.

In addition to being active in the futures markets, Sorkin is a licensed securities and insurance broker and a registered investment advisor specializing in investment strategies for retirement planning.
