SIKESTON - A diabetes support group will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday at the Missouri Delta Medical Center's classroom.
"It's kind of a renewal of the group," said Felecia Blanton, public relations director for MDMC.
She said the group was originally formed around the time the Delta Diabetes Center opened in September 1999. "We probably had the diabetes support group for the first year or so," said Blanton.
Dr. Muhannad Al-Kilani, endocrinologist, will speak on "Diabetes Awareness: Facts, Questions and Answers."
The meeting is offered by MDMC free of charge, according to Nan Thornton, certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian at Missouri Delta Medical Center.
The Delta Diabetes Center uses "a team approach" for treating diabetes, according to Thornton. "It's multidisciplinary."
In addition to the diabetes educator and a registered dietitian, the team includes a social worker, a physical therapist, a nurse and a pharmacist. "Dr. Al-Kilani oversees the team," said Thornton.
Assisting Thornton is Sherri Glover. "She and I work in conjunction in educating people about diabetes," said Thornton.
