SIKESTON - Elizabeth S. "Betty" Pool, 91, formerly of Rock Island, Ill., died Feb. 2, 2005, at the Sikeston Convalescent Center.
Born Nov. 16, 1913, in Galveston, Texas, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Cronholm Shield. A 1935 graduate of Augustana College, she graduated in 1948 with a master's degree in education from the University of Illinois. She started her teaching career as a second grade teacher at McKinley School in East Moline, Ill., and then went on to be principal at Lincoln School in East Moline from 1956-1966. For 10 years she was principal at the Meadowland Grade School in East Moline and finished her career as principal at McKinley School for one year before retiring in 1977, after 29 years in the teaching profession.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Elizabeth's Guild of the church in Rock Island. A life member of the Blackhawk Unit of Illinois Retired Teachers Association, she was also a life member of the National Education Association, National Elementary School Principals' Association and member of the American Business Women's Association, Delta Kamma Gamma Society, Phi Delta Kappa, Mystic Lodge 160 of Cambridge, Ill., and Sikeston Chapter 137 Order of the Eastern Star.
On Jan. 20, 1951, in Chicago, she married William C. Pool who preceded her in death on March 4, 1972.
She is survived by one stepson, Clarence Pool of Sikeston; and four stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
One stepgrandchild also preceded her in death.
No visitation is scheduled.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Rock Island.
Burial will follow in the Rock Island National Cemetery.
