Speakout 1/11

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

I live out here at Pharris Ridge and there was talk out here that we might be able to get city water here. Would you please check to see if we can get city water at Pharris Ridge in Sikeston.

We contacted Morehouse Mayor Pete Leija with your question. "We have talked with a water district about running water south (of Morehouse) but I'm now aware of the fact of running it to Pharris Ridge."

I read the letter from Leon Edwards who reminisced about days gone by on the Buckeye Plantation. I think I may have grown up with him and would like to contact him. If anyone knows how to contact Edwards, please leave a telephone number in SpeakOut so I can call him.

I've read numerous articles you have written about slumlords and houses that need to be fixed up or torn down. I agree with you 100 percent, but I need some advice and maybe you can help. I live in a decent home at best, but it needs some serious renovation. I have had the same job for 22 years and make a decent living. Due to some bad decision I have made in the past, I will be financially strapped for a long period. My question is, what do you do when you want to fix up the house but you don't have the cash?

If you have equity in your home, consider an equity loan for a small amount to make the needed renovations. With current low interest rates, perhaps you can get the cash and make the upgrades with only a small increase in your monthly payments. Devise a plan that matches your budget. Start slow with minor improvements and work toward those major renovations.

Mike, I share your frustration with people who produce children that they are unable to care for and groups who promote this behavior. But I have one question for you. Why would you single out the ACLU? They're not the only group who believes in the "right to procreate." There are religious organizations who forbid practicing birth control, and there are extreme right wingers who also promote this so-called "right." Name them all, otherwise you're not telling the full story.

You're right. The story on which the editorial was based centered on the ACLU. But, yes, your point is well made. Thank you.

I'm sorry, but I thought our election was over. What is the problem with the Democrats? It's two months after the election and thousands and thousands of votes went to the Republicans. They cannot drop it. Now they think they have been cheated. What is the matter with these people? Can't they let it go? It's done!
