Your view: Support Extension

Monday, April 5, 2004

My association with the Cooperative Extension Service goes back 26 years. Extension work is near and dear to my heart. After retiring from the Hinds County Extension Service in Jackson, Miss., on July 1, 2002, I left with mixed emotions about leaving my job and returning to Caruthersville, where I was born and raised. I came back to be closer to my family.

Little did I know that within five months of moving back here I would be fortunate enough to get back into Extension work.

I started working for the Pemiscot County Outreach and Extension office in November 2002. I am excited about being back in Extension work since I have done this most of my working life. As I told my ex counterparts in Mississippi after I started to work in this county, Extension must be in my blood.

This being a farming community I never dreamed that Extension would be in jeopardy of having to shut their doors to the citizens of this county. I believe in Extension and what we do for all the citizens. Extension is about people helping people with the latest technology and knowledge. I have no idea where else a person can turn to get the most updated information on anything that you might need to know about. Extension doesn't make money off of what we recommend or the services that we provide. We are paid by the taxes that are paid by the citizens. As a matter of fact I have heard a lot of clientele tell me that it is good to know they can see their tax dollars at work through the services and help that we provide. And by the way Extension is funded through federal, state and county money.

In all my years of Extension work I have never been able to put into just a few words what Extension is and what all Extension does. Maybe it is easier to say what "don't we do." Whatever information you want can be found through your Extension office. I encourage you to take a look at what all Extension can do for you and the citizens of this county. Extension has a wealth of knowledge for its citizens to tap in to.

I would like to share with you some examples of just "some" of the programs being offered through the Extension office in this State.

Quicken for Farmers

Soils and Crop Conferences

Training for Nursing Home Activity Directors

Pesticide Applicator Training

Master Gardener Courses

Babysitting Clinics

Dislocated Worker Program

Landscapers & Horticultural Workshops

Starting a Small Business The First Steps

Options for Small Acreages

I could name a lot more but it would take up a lot of time, so I encourage you if you have a computer to go to our website and check out all of the opportunities this County could utilize through the use of their Extension service.

Sincerely,

Melodie Avery
