Sikeston tracksters place fifth at Murphysboro

Monday, April 5, 2004

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- The Sikeston boys track and field team placed fifth in the 16-team Murphysboro Invitational Track Meet in Murphysboro, Ill., on Saturday.

Sparta captured the championship with 103 points. Cahokia took second with 90 points and East St. Louis had 79 points to take third.

Marion finished fourth with 74 points followed by the Bulldogs with 69.5 points.

"This was the best boys competition top to bottom that they've had at this meet in a while," said Sikeston head coach Jerry Dement. "We like to run against teams like this. I don't think our performance was great but it was decent. Our guys don't like to lose, but we faced some really good competition."

Sikeston's Felante Larry was the only first place finisher for the Bulldogs, taking first in the long jump with a leap of 21'9". He also ran legs on the Bulldogs 4 x 100 (fifth) and 4 x 200 meter relays (second) and he took fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.81.

Tyler Woodson took second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.21) and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (42.1).

Andy Croxford placed second in the shot put with a toss of 48'9".

"I really don't think we had any standout performances," said Dement. "We had good ones, but no standouts. Felante continues to run and jump well. Andy Croxford threw like he needed to in the shot put. Even though Tyler didn't win, he ran some good times into a headwind against some good competition."

The Bulldogs' 4 x 800 meter relay team, consisting of Clay Lincoln, Quinton Lamb, Trevor Ahlfield and Jacob Owens, took third at 8:40.

Lamb took second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.1. Thomas Elery finished third in the 200 meter dash at 22.75 and Lincoln took fourth in the 1600 meter run at 4:44.

"It was a good day," said Dement. "We had some spots that we didn't do as well as we liked to and we had some spots that we did better than we thought. Our relays aren't outstanding yet but we continue to point. We're pretty good in 14 out of 18 events. We're still weak in about four events and we're looking to improve."

The Bulldogs will compete in the Paducah Tilghman Invitational next Saturday.
