SHS netters face tough Clayton squad

Friday, May 20, 2005

DEXTER -- The Sikeston High school tennis team will participate in a Class 1 Sectional match at Dexter High School this Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Bulldogs will be pitted against a tough squad in Clayton High School. "We'll be taking on Clayton, who has the returning singles state champion," said Sikeston head coach Brian James. "And Dexter will be playing John Burroughs, which won the state championship last year. It's an uphill battle for both of us. We have two of the strongest teams in the state to play this weekend."

A win on Saturday would put them in the quarterfinals to face the winner of the other sectional contest between Dexter and John Burroughs High School later that day. It's a daunting goal, and this Sikeston team knows it.

"We're pretty realistic about it. We're certainly the underdogs in the sectionals," admitted James. "I think we've kind of overachieved this year. Anything we do from this point is an added bonus."

While Sikeston's focus this Saturday will be to win over Clayton and advance to the next stage, there will also be an opportunity for Bulldog senior and singles state qualifier Marc Leible to test his game in a marquee match against another state qualifier.

"On Clayton, Josh Goldstein is the returning singles champion," noted Coach James. "Marc Leible, who plays for us, will have a good chance to see how he stacks up against the state's best this Saturday. That's kind of the highlight of Saturday I think."
