PERRYVILLE - The Sikeston track and field team will be competing in a Class 3 sectional tomorrow at Perryville High School.
The Bulldogs have athletes in 13 of the 18 events competing. Team points will not be kept as this is only a qualifying round for the state track meet next weekend.
Athletes must finish in the top four to qualify for the state round.
"We're entered in 13 on Saturday and we'd love to get all of them through," said head coach Jerry Dement. "But if we can get nine or 10 or more, then we'll be in good shape. Our district and sectional is so tough, if we get to the state meet then we usually place pretty high."
Sikeston is seeded high in many events, including the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 meter relays.
Individuals that will be competing are: Felante Larry (long jump, triple jump, 100 meter dash), Clay Lincoln (1600 and 3200 meter runs), Tyler Woodson (110 and 300 meter hurdles), Quinton Lamb (200 and 400 meter dashes), Thomas Elery (200 meter dash), Kirk Butler (pole vault), Apollo Patterson (long jump) and Andy Croxford (shot put).
"To be honest with you we've got a legit chance in every single event," said Dement. "One thing about our boys team is most of them have been to state before. We feel like if we can get them through then they'll be able to handle the pressure pretty well."
On the girls side, Paige Kaiser will be competing in the pole vault, Traci Jackson will compete in the 800 meter run and the 4 x 400 meter relay team will also compete.
"Paige really is going to have to jump well to get our in the pole vault, but she's got the ability to do that," said Dement. "Our girls are seeded high so if they have a good day we can get all of them through."
