ST. LOUIS - Mississippi County Boxing traveled to St. Louis Feb 25-26th for the Annual Henry Armstrong Diamond Gloves Tournament.
More than 150 boxers were on hand for this tournament, making for two full nights of great action in the ring.
Starting for Miss. Co. Boxing on Friday evening was Mike Warren who had fought well, but lost to William Boyd of the Midwest Warriors Boxing Team from St. Louis
in the first round.
Next was Kenneth Woods losing to Kevin Lee from the Midwest Warriors Boxing Team in a controversial stoppage due to a "Nosebleed".
"I was not happy at all with the stoppage, Kenneth stated that he was fine and able to continue," coach Brad Wick stated, "That's just boxing, I guess."
Matthew Gephart and Roger Achter got walk overs to Saturday nights competitions due to no shows for their bouts.
Saturday evening looked to be off to a good start with Roger Achter appearing to be ahead in the first two rounds against Karl Howard of St. Louis. After getting caught with shot in the third round, the Referee stopped contest with Achter losing.
"This was a very good fight against a very tough fighter, we'll get him next time." Wick stated.
Matthew Gephart was again uncontested due to a no show once again.
Ending the evening for Miss. Co. Boxing was Chris Gephart in a second meeting with Chris Duren of St. Louis' North County Boxing Team. This was a very good match-up between these two fighters,
Gephart set the pace early and kept up the pressure through all three rounds landing some good clean shots on Duren.
"When it was all over, I felt we had it." Wick stated about the match-up,
"Once again, I was proven wrong."
Gephart lost by decision.
Mississippi County Boxing will be stepping up their travel schedule to prepare for bigger tournaments coming up on the calender.
The Home Show is planned for the spring as one of the tune-up shows on their schedule. If your business or any supporters in the community are interested in helping to sponsor the gym for these events, you may contact Wick at (573) 380-0383.
