SIKESTON - Jerry Newton, 58, died Oct. 31, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Born Nov. 15, 1945, in Gideon, son of Ada Virdell Branch Newton of St. Paul and the late Clelon James Newton, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marston. While serving with the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War, he was wounded in battle on April 10, 1968, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a retired veterans' representative for the Missouri Workforce Development Center.
On Jan. 8, 1971, at the First United Methodist Church in Benton, he married J. Colleen Charles who survives of the home.
Survivors in addition to his wife and mother include: three daughters and two sons-in-law, Laura Newton and Michael Landers of Sikeston, Emily Newton of St. Louis and Amy Newton and Gerard Long of Portageville; four sisters, Diane Newton Foley of St. Paul, Debbie Newton Fields of Winghaven, Sandy Newton Goodfellow of Warrenton and Cynthia Newton Wiley of Dardenne Prairie; and two grandchildren, Cody Michael Landers and Whitney Brooke Landers of Sikeston.
One sister, Norma Newton Maurer, preceded him in death.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston where services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Rick Lasley, pastor of Wesley Methodist Church, will officiate.
Full military honors will be conducted at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston.
Pallbearers will be: Keith Moore, Jesse Goodfellow, Joe Chilcutt, Greg Maurer, Tim Bertinella and Jason Bickus.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Christopher Foley, Bradley Maurer, Jason Foley, Nicholas Minderman and Jacob Wiley.
