CAPE GIRARDEAU - Elmer Dwight Hopkins, 98, formerly of Bloomfield, died May 21, 2004, at the Lutheran Home.
Born Oct. 28, 1905, in Bloomfield, son of the late James and Vesta Hopkins, he had lived in the Bloomfield area most of his life. He owned and operated the Hopkins IGA grocery store in Bloomfield for more than 40 years and was a member and deacon for the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield.
On July 12, 1924, he married Gladys Bess who preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 1956.
He and Mary Burch Henson were married in December 1957 and she survives of Cape Girardeau.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Barbara West of Cape Girardeau; one stepson, Kent Henson of Heeston, Kan.; one stepdaughter, Donna Cook of Houston, Texas; one sister, Gerva Slacum of Edenburg, Texas; and 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Shively Brown and three brothers.
Visitation is from 1 p.m. today until service time at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield. The Rev. Michael Arthur will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
