NEW MADRID - The New Madrid County Central Eagles (2-14) hosted the Scott City Rams (12-6) Tuesday night and came out on the losing end of a 67-59 score.
Scott City's Mark Dannenmueller dominated the contest by scoring 38 points including three 3-pointers.
The contest remained close in the early going despite a slow start by the Eagles. They fell behind 11-6 with 2:25 left in the first period on Dannenmueller's first trey and the Rams led 13-8 after one.
On some balanced scoring, NMCC knotted the score at 19-19 at the 3:17 mark on a Joseph Howell bucket. Howell had 19 points in the contest.
At the 2:55 mark Eugene Cooper gave the Eagles their first lead at 21-19, but the advantage was short-lived as Dannenmueller collected two straight buckets to give the Rams a 23-22 lead at the half.
On some hot shooting by NMCC's Quinton Binion, the Eagles took the lead at the 5:18 point on a shot from downtown.
Dannenmueller answered with two quick buckets and Scott City took the lead 43-39 at the end of three quarters and would not trail again in the contest.
"We didn't play well, we played hard and we still did too many little things wrong. We missed block-outs, too many turnovers. That's what we've got to cut down on if we are going to win a game," said Eagles' coach Scott Kruse.
"The kids are working hard in practice and they worked hard tonight, that's not what's getting us beat. We didn't have one guy that can just score, and we couldn't find an answer for one guy tonight (Dannenmueller). It's been a long time since I watched one guy beat a team I've coached. He just flat-out beat us,"
Scott City's Mark Johnston, who joined Dannenmueller in double figures with 13 points, chipped in three consecutive buckets in the fourth period and the Rams had their biggest lead of the contest at 60-49 with 2:49 left.
Despite four NMCC 3-pointers in the stanza, the Eagles never could regain the lead.
The junior Rams won the jayvee contest by a 57-28 score.
New Madrid will travel to Doniphan to take on the Dons Friday night. Scott City will host Bell City on Tuesday night.
