Luehmann wins district title

SIKESTON -- After being postponed Thursday the Class 1 District 2 tennis tournament took place Friday, seeing an underdog win the district title.

Senior Mindi Leuhmann of Charleston won the singles division and earned her third straight trip to the state tournament. Luehmann, who entered as the third seed, received a bye in the first round before dispatching Malden's Ashley Lancaster 6-0, 6-1 and Heather Allen of Park Hills Central 6-1, 6-2.

Luehmann's then faced Sikeston's Elizabeth Killion, who was seeded second, in the semi-finals. Luehmann won the match 6-2, 6-2 and moved on to face the top-seeded Amy Rose of Dexter.

Luehmann won the district title by handing Rose her first loss of the season 6-3, 7-5. Luehmann will play again in the state tournament on Oct. 25 in Springfield.

Dexter won the team competition with Park Hills Central finishing second. Both teams will advance to sectionals which will take place Saturday. Dexter will face John Burroughs while Park Hills Central will face Clayton.
