CHARLESTON -- Police are investigating the death of an unidentified body retrieved from the Mississippi River Friday in Mississippi County.
According to Mississippi County Coroner Terry Parker, the U.S. Coast Guard notified the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department between 4-4:30 p.m. Friday that a body had been pulled from the Mississippi River near the Thompson Bend area, which is in the northeast portion of Mississippi County.
Apparently someone who had been fishing or boating in the river saw the remains and alerted the Coast Guard, Parker said about the discovery of the body.
Parker described the victim, which had not been in the water for more than 24 hours, as a white female with reddish-blond hair and who was about 40 years of age or older. She is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds.
As of Friday night there had not been any reports of a missing person in Mississippi County. An autopsy was planned for Saturday in Farmington, Parker said.
"We are doing an autopsy at Farmington to determine the cause of death and to see if the person was dead before she went in the water or if she drowned," Parker said.
Anyone who is aware of a missing person in the area that matches the description of the body and hasn't been seen since late Wednesday or early Thursday is encouraged to contact the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department at (573) 683-2111.
