SIKESTON - Dr. Frank H. Connely, for 27 years a Baptist missionary in China and for two years a prisoner of the Japanese, spoke at the Baptist Church here Wednesday and told a large audience that his treatment by the Japanese was at times considerate and at other times indifferent.

SIKESTON - The construction of Interstate Highway 57 in southern Illinois has been suspended, pending the final decision of the juncture with Interstate I-24, now under discussion.

SIKESTON - Workers were busy Wednesday afternoon constructing driveways at the Missouri Delta Community Hospital in Sikeston.

SIKESTON - Jeannie Williams, a member of the Sikeston Public Schools Board of Education, treated some students to a magic show at their perfect attendance award party. This magic show emphasized learning to the students and for the parents to raise their children with the will to succeed and to "be proud to walk in their parents' shoes."

SIKESTON - Three men were recently presented with a plaque by the Make-A-Wish Foundation for four years of service giving wagon rides during the annual Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo. The plaque featured a drawing by Make-A-Wish child Melissa McDowell. By charging a dollar for each rider, these men have raised more than $3,000 for the Foundation. The wagon rides will begin at the Sikeston Factory Outlet Mall during rodeo week from noon to 5 p.m. Bill Helms, C.A. Hammon and Bill Helms Jr. received the plaque. Shad Old from the Make-A-Wish Foundation presented the plaque to them.
