SIKESTON - Twyla Leach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Leach, won honorable mention in the National Chiropractors' Association Good Posture Poster Contest for which she received a $10 prize. Her poster won second place in the state competition for which she was awarded a $25 U.S. Savings Bond.
NEW MADRID - Following nearly two weeks of testimony in Cape Girardeau, a jury returned a verdict in favor of the New Madrid County R-1 School District and superintendent, Ray Melton, Thursday on seven counts. For Jo Alexander and Avril Skinner, the jury found their constitutional rights had been violated through the reassignment but awarded no damages.
SIKESTON - Jennifer Lee McDowell, 17-year-old daughter of Eddie and Christy McDowell of Sikeston, was crowned Miss Riverfest. Ms. McDowell received a crown, trophy, flowers, a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, a 14-karat gold bracelet, silver photo frame, T-shirt and several gift certificates.

SIKESTON - Four-year-old Ginny Ray seemed to be enjoying herself as she drove around in one of the rides. Junefest continues tonight with Brix, a rock-n-roll top 40 band, taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. The event is a fund-raiser for the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce.
