Primary will decide many races

Friday, July 30, 2004

CHARLESTON - Once again almost all county-level races in Mississippi County will be decided in the primary election Aug. 3.

There will be a two-way race in November for sheriff, but it won't be the usual two parties. Running on the Democrat's ballot are Don Chance and Keith Moore. The winner will face the sole Libertarian candidate, A.J. Groves Sr., in November. Incumbent Larry Turley is not seeking re-election.

Incumbent Martin Lucas has an opponent in the primary on the Democratic ballot for second district commissioner: Charles Byassee. The winner Aug. 3 will face the sole Republican candidate for a Mississippi County office, Stanley Hubbard.

Those voting Aug. 3 as Democrats will decide who fills the remaining county offices with no candidates from other parties running.

Buddy Reeves will try to beat out incumbent Homer D. Oliver for the Democratic nomination for first district county commissioner.

W.R. "Bill" Thompson, the incumbent county assessor, will face two fellow Democrats in the Aug. 3 primary: Chuck Davis and Rebecca Boyd Presson.

Democrats will select either incumbent Terry Parker or Dr. Donald A. Raithel in the primary for coroner.

The next public administrator will be either Richard T. "Rick" Reed or Pam W. Crawford, both listed as Democrats.

Also in Mississippi County, voters in Bertrand will decide whether or not to impose a city sales tax of one percent.
