SAY Team of the Day: Lewis Furniture

Monday, July 29, 2002

SIKESTON -- Lewis Furniture took fifth place in the National League this year, winning four games in the regular season. The squad was seeded No. 5 in the year-end tournament and lost to Burger King in the first round.

"If you look at what we were expected to do, four wins was a decent season for us," said Lewis coach Steve Beydler. "We were probably picked to win one or two games -- maybe."

Lewis Furniture went on a three-game wining streak halfway through the season. But just when it looked like the team had it all put together, Lewis ran into the meat of its schedule.

"We had some very good competition this year," noted Beydler. "I'm very proud of boys for the way they pulled together. We had some very close games that could have gone either way."

Ross Lasater played first base, Stephen Beydler was at second, Hunter Dillender was at short, Timothy Hart was on third and Clayton Matthews was behind the plate.

Billy Green was a utility player, splitting time at pitcher, second base, shortstop and centerfield.

The outfield consisted of David Baker, Gratten Allen and Billy McIntosh.

The team's three main pitchers were Logan Gilmore, Hart and Dillender.

Dillender was named a first team all star. Gilmore and Hart both made the second team.
