SIKESTON -- DeWitt Auction Company took seventh place in the Junior Babe Ruth League this year, finishing with a record of 2-10.
"It was kind of a disappointing year," said DeWitt Auction coach Tom Ayers. "We lost four one-run ballgames that could have gone either way. One thing I was proud of was the kids we had didn't quit, even though we lost a lot of ballgames early. Everybody kept playing hard and we got better."
In the year-end tournament, the squad upset KSIM in the first round 6-5. The team then lost to Market Place, the eventual tournament champions, by the same score.
"Good things started to happen at the end of the year," said Ayers. "We stared playing smarter, playing a lot closer ballgames. Even though the win-loss record was kind of disappointing, we saw a lot of improvement in the kids."
Cody Cooper was the team's ace, and Andrew Box was behind the plate. Michael Sansagraw and Craig Millington played first base. Brandon Ayers played shortstop, Austin Williams was at second and Spencer Ayers was on third.
The outfield consisted of Michael Ragsdell, Robert St. John and Jacob Mikels. Garrett May and Christopher Hampton were both utility players.
"Michael (Ragsdell) made a lot of good plays," said Ayers. "I wish everybody had his desire. We had 12 kids on the team, and all of them played. On a lot of the other teams, the weaker players would get frustrated and quit, or stop coming to practice. All of our kids always showed up."
Williams and Spencer Ayers were named to the 13-year-old all-star team. One the 14-year-old side, Brandon Ayers, Cooper and Box were named all-stars.
"Those were our leaders most of the season," said Ayers.
