"We did not play very well today," said Sikeston head coach Lynne DeWitt. "We were sluggish from the start. We are capable of playing much better than we did."
In singles, Elizabeth Killion lost 2-8 to Julia Zill; Lindsay Leible lost 1-8 to Frances Kalich; Charlie Richey lost 5-8 to Neha Gujarati; Jeri Nichols lost 0-8 to Shelly Bellington; Chelsea Gilliland lost 4-8 to Kassie Everett; and Hallie Lambert lost 4-8 to Jenny Hillis.
In doubles, Killion/Leible lost 3-8 to Zill/Kalich; Richey/Nichols lost 1-8 to Gujarati/Billington; and Gilliland/Lambert lost 4-8 to Everett/Barks.
In the junior varsity, Sikeston lost 0-6 to Poplar Bluff's JV.
Sikeston will host Charleston today at 4 p.m.
MALDEN -- Charleston's tennis team swept Malden on Monday, 9-0.
In varsity singles, Mindi Leuhmann defeated Malden's Ashley Lancaster 8-1. Megan Leuhmann blanked Malden's Rachael Phillips 8-0 and Claire Showmaker defeated Malden's Dana Christian 8-1.
Laura Burton shut out Malden's Denisha Dunnigan 8-0, Libby Renaud swept Malden's Lindsey Hector 8-0, then Kamiya Sager defeated Malden's Rushayne Branch 8-1.
In varsity doubles, Megan Leuhmann and Showmaker beat Lancaster and Christian 8-1.
Mindy Leuhmann and Sager defeated Phillips and Dunnigan 8-1, then Burton and Renaud swept Hector and Branch 8-0.
"I thought we played pretty well," said Charleston coach Mitch Baker. "We still have some things to work on, but we're starting to play a little better. We've been pretty solid in singles most of the year. Now we've just got to come around in doubles."
Charleston (4-2) will travel to Sikeston today for a match at 4 p.m.
Charleston's junior varsity defeated Malden 4-0.
Singles winners were Julie Smith, Lauren Smith and Heather Ludwig. The doubles team of Kara True and Leslie Hall also won.
