SIKESTON - The First Baptist Church reports 115 children enrolled in Vacation Bible School on opening day. Mrs. Jewell Allen is conducting the school five days a week.

BLODGETT - Charles Hampton Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hampton, celebrated his fifth birthday with a party at his parents' home Saturday.

SIKESTON - Effective June 25, the work force at the Sikeston Power Station will be reduced by 17 employees, according to E.R. "Dick" Inman, director of municipal utilities. Inman blamed a lack of electrical demand for the layoff.

ANNA, Ill. - Wins over New Madrid and Anna gave the Sikeston American Legion team the championship of a four-team tournament here Saturday. Phillip Carnell fanned 10 and allowed seven hits in a 3-1 win over New Madrid in the first game. Then, Brian Becker threw a two-hitter as Sikeston ripped Anna, 11-0.

SAN ANTONIO - Airman James L. Backfisch has graduated from Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is the son of Harold J. and Brenda Backfisch of Benton, Mo., and is a 1988 graduate of Thomas W. Kelly High School.

SIKESTON - DeWitt's got hits from Sexton, Ponder, Tucker, L. Hovis, D. Hovis, McFall, Early, DeWitt and Miles in its 18-4 win in major league play. Bruenderman, Hammock and Bryant each had home runs for The Landing while Cook, Hahs and Wilson also had hits. The final score - DeWitt, 18 to The Landing, 4.
