Born Oct. 27, 1926, at Baldwin, Miss., son of the late Barney Lee and Lucy Reeves Newell, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Dexter. Before retiring, he had been a farmer and was a foreman for the Sikeston Sheltered Workshop.
On Nov. 12, 1945, at Jonesboro, Ark., he married Mary Kathryn Graue who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: three sons, David Newell of Dexter and Terry Newell and Randy Newell of Grayridge; six daughters, Jennie Pullium of Grayridge, Norma Hargrove of Dexter, Donna Pemberton of Morehouse and Glenda Kearbey, Tresa Freeland and Sandra Suggs of Sikeston; one brother, Ray Newell of Essex; and 26 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, James Newell, Willie Newell, Travis Newell, Bernice Newell and Boyce Newell; and one sister, Iva Mae Brawley.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Revs. Danny Collings, Bob Wiggins and Ira Sandefer will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
