Bulldogs advance to SEMO semifinals

Monday, May 2, 2005

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston advanced to the semifinals of the SEMO Conference Tournament with a 10-0 win over seventh-seeded New Madrid County Central on Saturday.

There were no surprises as the top four seeds advanced. Sikeston, the second seed, will face No. 3 Cape Central today at 5 p.m., while top-seeded Jackson meets No. 4 Notre Dame at 3.

Due to earlier postponements because of foul weather, the tournament has gone to single elimination with the championship game to follow the two semifinals tonight. All games will be played at Capaha Park.

In Saturday's contest, the Bulldogs got a dominant pitching performance from Cullen DeHart and an errorless defensive effort to shut out the Eagles in five innings.

DeHart went the distance, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Sikeston wasted no time lighting the scoreboard against NMCC and losing pitcher Jordan Kimball.

In the first inning, leadoff hitter J.R. Bizzell singled, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Baker then blasted a solo home run to lift the Bulldogs to an early 2-0 lead.

Kimball, with control problems and shaky defensive support, gave up three runs in the third inning as the Bulldogs took advantage of an error, three walks and a couple of wild pitches to increase the margin to 5-0.

In the fourth, Bizzell singled home Eric Chappell for a 6-0 advantage.

Sikeston closed out NMCC with four runs in the fifth. Two came home on Bizzell's bases-loaded double and Matt Limbaugh chased home two more with a single.

Bizzell, the Bulldogs' offensive star with a 3-for-4 day, scored two runs, stole two bases and drove home three runs.

Baker (1-for-1, two runs scored, one RBI), Chappell (1-3, two runs scored), Landers (1-1, run scored, one RBI) and Limbaugh (1-4, two RBIs) collected the other Bulldog hits.
