Born June 2, 1928, in New Madrid, son of the late John Julius and Margurite Roch Ellis, he graduated from New Madrid High School and was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a city administrator or supervisor most of his career and had most recently served as city administrator for the City of Higginsville before retiring in 1988. He was a 48-year member of the American Legion and loved golf, woodworking and gardening. He was also reportedly able to fix anything, including a broken heart.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Peggy Ellis of the home; a sister, Helen Ellis of New Madrid; two grandchildren, Jessie Mitchem and Tony Mitchem; a great-granddaughter, Emma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia.
The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. Monday until 11 a.m., when a cremation memorial service will be conducted at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid.
