SIKESTON - Miss Joe Smith was complemented with a surprise birthday party Sunday evening by her mother, Mrs. W.S. Smith at her home.


SIKESTON - The $2 million Hotel Melbourne in St. Louis has been purchased by the owners of the Gayosho Hotel in Memphis. S.W. Barton of Sikeston, member of the Gayosho board of directors, and former Sikeston resident Fred Callahan, chairman of the board of directors, will hold similar positions at the Hotel Melbourne.

SIKESTON - The new Murray Lane Elementary School, until the rains yesterday, was two weeks ahead of schedule in construction, according to O.M. Oliver, job superintendent of the Ryan Construction Co.

BENTON - Officials of the Cape Girardeau and Scott County courts hope to reach an agreement Monday on the boundary question between the two counties along Cape LaCroix Creek. The matter arose when Biokyowa Inc. questioned the boundary in connection with a project under construction.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Eagles Club Ladies Auxiliary recently presented donations to the Sikeston Heritage House and Senior Citizen Bus System. Lady Eagles Madam President Jolene Tyrone presented the donations to Bobbie White, with the Senior Citizens Bus System, and Loreda Compass with the Heritage House.


SIKESTON - The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post has announced plans for the 47th annual Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program. Each year the national audio essay scholarship competition is offered to sophomores juniors and seniors. The 1993-94 theme is "My Commitment to America."
