Sikeston wrestlers fall to Cape Central

Friday, January 7, 2005

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston wrestling team fell to 1-4 on the season with a 54-24 road loss to Cape Central on Thursday.

Sikeston forfeited four matches and were surrendering 24 points before the meet even started.

But even more disappointing for head coach Ivan Robison was the number of times his wrestlers were pinned on Thursday -- the Bulldogs were pinned six times on the night.

I just don't like the fact that we're giving up so many pin," said Robison. "They're coming along though. We're young and we're still learning. It looks good for us down the road."

Sikeston had four winners on the night, including a forfeit victory for heavyweight Joe Johnson.

Dee Bizzell (103 pounds), Cody Anderson (125) and Chris Northern (215) each won their matches by pin.

Bulldog wrestlers that lost by pin were Craig Burton (119), Seth Baker (130), Logan Berry (135), Ashton Cantrell (140), Gavilan Bland (145) and Zach Friend (160).

Sikeston forfeited matches in 112, 152, 171 and 189 weight classes.

"Overall Dee Bizzell did an outstanding job," said Robison. "Him and Cody Anderson and my two heavier guys all four having winning records. They're really doing well. The rest of the guys are trying to catch up."

Sikeston will compete in the Park Hills Tournament on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SIKESTON - The Scott County Central girls basketball team improved to 8-2 on the season with a 99-8 home thrashing of East Prairie on Thursday.

Scott Central led 35-3 after one quarter and 64-4 at the half.

Scott Central was led by Brittney Peet's 32 points. Brittany Godwin and Trice Johnson each had 21 points followed up by Janet Penrod's 13 points.

Scott Central got the third seed in the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament and they will play sixth-seeded Oran on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. at Delta High School.

Due to East Prairie not having a junior varsity team, Scott Central's junior varsity defeated Meadow Heights 55-13.

PORTAGEVILLE - The Portageville Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-1 on the season with a 53-37 home victory against Kennett on Thursday.

Portageville led 12-8 after one quarter and just 25-23 at the half.

But the Lady Bulldogs out-scored Kennett 14-4 in the third quarter to push the lead to double figures where they were able to hold on for the win.

Portageville was led by Hannah Rone's 14 points.

Janetta Hassell had 11 points and Faith Long had 10 points.

The Lady Bulldogs will play at South Pemiscot on Monday at 6 p.m.

Portageville's junior varsity beat Kennett's JV 37-29.
