SIKESTON - The Sikeston girls tennis team fell to 4-3 on the season with a 2-7 loss to the Charleston Lady Bluejays.
Sikeston had singles winners out of No. 1 Elizabeth Killion and No. 5 Chelsea Gilliland on the day.
But the Lady Bluejays were able to win the rest of the singles matches and sweep the doubles competition to pull out the victory.
"It's good to get a win," said Charleston head coach Mitch Baker. "This is the first match of the year that we've played better in doubles than we did in singles. That was a pleasant surprise. I'm pleased with the way we played today."
Killion defeated Mindi Leuhmann 8-5 and Gilliland beat Libby Renaud 8-6.
"Elizabeth and Chelsea had very good matches," said Sikeston head coach Lynne DeWitt. "We had other matches that the score could have gone the other way. We have to continue to work hard and we need to work on our mental game."
In other singles matches, No. 2 Lindsay Leible lost 5-8 to Megan Leuhmann; No. 3 Charlie Richey fell 1-8 to Claire Showmaker; No. 4 Jeri Nichols fell 4-8 to Laura Burton; and No. 6 Jamie Davidson lost 3-8 to KaMiya Sager.
In doubles, Killion/Leible lost 5-8 to Mindi Leuhmann/Sager; Richey/Nichols lost 0-8 to Megan Leuhmann/Showmaker; and Gilliland/Davidson lost 3-8 to Burton/Renaud.
