DEXTER -- The Sikeston 13-year-old All-Stars got fourth place in the state tournament at Dexter. Districts were also held in Dexter, making traveling much easier than in previous district and state tournaments.
District teams that competed were Dexter, Sikeston, Kennett, Caruthersville, East Prairie and New Madrid.
State teams in the competition were Dexter, Sikeston, Jefferson City, Mineral Area, Macon, Lebanon, Southwest Ozark and Chillicothe.
Sikeston overcame Jefferson City, Chillicothe, Macon and Southwest Ozark for the fourth place position.
"Even though the boys didn't win first place, they played as winners," said coach Stan Ivie. "Their hard work, dedication and support for their team members was outstanding. Family members and friends joined together cheering for the 13-year-old All-Stars. They won and lost with dignity. They were a strong-knit team and it showed. The 13-year-old Stars made Sikeston proud."
The Babe Ruth Most Valuable Player Hustler award was given to one player after each game. Those receiving this honor were Stan Ivie, Justin Deere (three times), Chris Carnell (two times), Zach Culver and Strick Green.
"We never expected to get as far as we did because when All-Star selections were made, the league focused on trying to keep the 14-year-old All-Star team competitive in the Midwest Regionals since Sikeston was hosting the Midwest Regional Tournament," said Ivie. "Two key 13-year-old players that could have pushed us over the hump to win the state tournament were the top two out of three players on the 14-year-old All-Star team."
Strick Green, Chris Carnell and Josh Jackson pitched some outstanding games. Justin Deere was thrown into the catcher's position and did a nice job. Spencer Ayers and Zach Culver kept third base held tightly. Stan Ivie performed well at first base as well as hitting the ball.
Outfielders that performed well were Austin Williams, Freddie Gilliland, Jacob Owens, A.J. Vanover, Gerald Winfield and Tyler Dame.
