DELTA - The Kelly Lady Hawks captured first place in the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament for the fourth time in five years after beating Scott County Central 51-42 on Saturday in Delta.
Kelly trailed 11-8 after one quarter but took control from there. They led 25-19 at the half and 34-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hawks (13-1) got a career-high 33 points from Kelly Essner. Mindy Robert followed up with 12 points.
Scott Central's Brittney Peet had 18 points to lead the Bravettes. Nyketia Johnson, a transfer from Sikeston, added 14 points.
"I was very proud of the girls -- they're buying into the system of playing hard with a positive attitude," said Kelly head coach Rod McQuerter. "That's a remarkable accomplishment for these girls, Kelly High School and the community. Scott Central put up a good fight. They have a lot of talent. I'm just proud of the girls with the way they competed against a very good basketball team."
Kelly will host St. Vincent next Monday at 6:30 p.m.
MARBLE HILL - The Oran Lady Eagles improved to 3-5 on the season with a 48-24 win on the road at Woodland.
Oran got 21 points out of Amanda Eftink to lead all scorers. No other player reached double figures.
Oran will play at Delta on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
DEXTER - The Sikeston freshman basketball team lost to Dexter on Monday, 58-32.
Sikeston was led by Stephen Jackson's 10 points. Dominique McCray had seven points.
