Born March 14, 1930, along the banks of the James Bayou in Dorena, Teddy rose to fame as head chef of the award-winning and nationally renowned James Bayou Catfish Cookers. In his capacity as self-proclaimed goodwill ambassador for East Prairie and all of Mississippi County, he endeavored to spread his own unique brand of truth and beauty.
From 1968 until his death, Teddy was associated with Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie. Through decades of nurturing those in their darkest hours, he became a beloved fixture in his community. His tireless efforts and unstoppable personality made him a blessed treasure to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Teddy is preceded in death by his father, Ted Bennett; his mother, Hattie Mae Bennett; and a precious daughter, Tammy Jane Bennett. He is also preceded by sisters Virginia Maureen Varner, Ila Maxine Miller, Marcie Ercell DeBaun; and a brother, Beverly Floyd Bennett.
Surviving are his wife, Jane Alice Bennett; two sons and daughters-in-law, Samuel Teddy and Lisa Kay Bennett and Roy Lee and Lacretia Ann Bennett; two brothers, Ruben Archie Bennett and Harold Eugene Bennett; three sisters, Annie Viola Garrett, Ruth Elizabeth Byassee and Jessie Alfreda Miller; one grandson, Corey Lee Bennett; two granddaughters, Lindley Jane Bennett and Brittan Tedi Bennett; and nephews, nieces, cousins and a plethora of friends.
Visitation continues until 8 p.m. today at Shelby Funeral Home.
A celebration eulogy will be held at 6 p.m. today at the First Christian Church in East Prairie.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. John Archie officiating.
Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery near Charleston.
