Special events set

Sunday, November 7, 2004

I want to remind everyone about the upcoming "Holiday Celebration in Historic Downtown Sikeston." This annual event will be Nov. 12-14.

There will be many activities going on including free carriage rides on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Sikeston Public Library will provide a children's story hour at Paul's Christian Book Store on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Kenny Rogers Children's Center will have a concession stand with hot chocolate and gift wrapping for donations inside a heated tent provided by Show Me Rental and located at the corner of Front and New Madrid streets. In addition to the downtown restaurants being open Friday night, the Oaks Senior Center will host a chili dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The Sikeston Depot will be open to visitors Friday evening as well as Saturday and Sunday and Santa Claus will be watching out for all the good little girls and boys. We hope you can come down and enjoy this kickoff for the holidays.

I would like to take this opportunity to promote an upcoming Chamber event scheduled for Nov. 18. The 34th Annual Farmers Recognition Banquet will take place at the Elks Lodge beginning at 6:30 p.m.

We will be recognizing farm families from Stoddard, Scott, New Madrid and Mississippi counties. We will also be presenting the Sikeston Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer Award, the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Service Award, the Cargill AgHorizons Marketing Award and the Farm Woman of the Year Award. It will be an evening of good food, door prizes, auctions, raffles and fun.

Tickets for the banquet can be purchased at the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce office.

Finally, I would like to thank the SACC volunteers who helped us out with the membership drive this past week. SACC turns 70 years old this month and I would like to share with you a few of the reasons a business or individual would want to belong to the Chamber.

One of the top reasons would be the referrals the Chamber office staff makes every day. When someone contacts us needing services or products we refer them to our Chamber members only.

SACC is also involved in new business contacts and economic development for Miner, Sikeston, Scott and New Madrid counties. We publicize the Sikeston/Miner area to the outside world on a daily basis through phone, Website and walk-in traffic. Our Website provides information to the outside world and through Web links provides additional exposure to our members' Websites. We are the frontline for information about the Sikeston and Miner areas and continually strive to provide the most current information available to residents, tourists and business prospects.

Our work is supported by our Chamber membership and special events hosted by SACC. We appreciate our members and all they do to enable SACC to continue its mission "to improve the business climate and enhance the quality of life within the area served."

If you are not currently a member of the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce and would like to join this 70-year-old organization please contact us at 573-471-2498 or check out our Website at www.sikeston.net.
