Friday, October 22, 2004

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston's junior varsity soccer team captured fifth place in the Cape Central JV Tournament on Thursday.

The Bulldogs (7-11-1) slipped past Farmington 1-0 on a goal by Adam Gillean eight minutes into the second half. Chris Matthews assisted on the game winner.

"We pretty much dominated the game even though we had trouble finding the net," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long, whose team outshot Farmington 19-1. "I'm pleased with the way the JV is playing right now. They're ending their season on a high note."

The tournament highlight for Sikeston (2-1 in the tournament) was an upset victory over host Cape Central in the first round, their first-ever win over the Tigers.

Sikeston goalie Johnny Peeler recorded the shutout.
