CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston won its first round match in the Cape Central junior varsity soccer tournament on Monday, blanking Farmington 3-0.
The Bulldogs finished with 25 shots on goal compared to Farmington's seven as Sikeston keeper Jake Marsh recorded six saves.
"I thought we played pretty well," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long. "When you shoot 25 times, you hope to score more than three goals, but we played well enough to win."
Sikeston's goals were scored by John Robert Bizzell, Lance Rhodes and Martin Schaefer. All three were assisted by Ross Gelsheimer.
"All three goals were head balls," explained Long. "One was off a corner, and the other two were crosses. (Gelsheimer) put them in there, and we had three guys in there to hit them. He had a real good game."
Sikeston will now face top-seeded Cape Central today at 4:45 p.m. in the second round. The Tigers defeated Kennett 10-0 on Monday.
