SIKESTON - Joe D. "J.D." Sherrod, 79, died at 5:50 a.m. Sept. 17, 2001, at his residence.
Born Aug. 25, 1922, near Hayti, to the late Dave Crockett and Rosalee Brodglin Sherrod, he served in the Civil Conservation Corps and served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. A postal worker who retired after 28 years with the U.S. Postal Service, he owned and operated Sherrod's Upholstery Shop for seven years.
On Nov. 18, 1943, at Marion, Ark., he married Virginia Eaton, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: five sons, Joe D. Sherrod Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Richard Sherrod of Millington, Tenn., Ronnie Sherrod and Charles E. Sherrod of Sikeston and Jay A. Sherrod of Centerton, Ark.; two daughters, Judy Hopkins of Humboldt, Tenn., and Susan Jolliff of Rogers, Ark.; one brother, Howard Sherrod of Detroit, Mich.; one sister, Dorothy Montgomery of Gladewater, Texas; and 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one grandson.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel where services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Ira Sanderfer with the Smith Avenue Church of God will officiate.
Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Joe D. Sherrod Jr., Richard Sherrod, Ronnie Sherrod, Charles Sherrod, Jay Sherrod, Terry Hopkins and Rick Jolliff.
