Jayvee football earns road win

Tuesday, September 18, 2001

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston junior varsity football team improved to 3-0 on the season with an 18-14 road win over Cape Central on Monday.

Sikeston trailed going into the fourth quarter but the Bulldogs pulled out the win with a pass play to Scotty Keenan.

"We played extremely well," said Sikeston head coach Charlie Vickery. "The second half we moved the ball on them.

Defensively we played well the entire game. They had one long pass play and a kick return. Other than that we did a good job."

Sikeston got on the board first when Stephen Miller scored on a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line to make it 6-0.

Cape took the lead on a long pass play to hold a 7-6 advantage at halftime.

The Tigers returned the opening kickoff of the second half to take a 14-6 lead.

Miller scored on his second quarterback sneak later in the quarter to pull the Bulldogs to 14-12.

Sikeston won the game in the fourth when Miller found Keenan for a 25-yard TD pass.

It was Miller's first junior varsity game after an injury sidelined him.

"The JV is getting better, they're playing and they're doing a good job," said Vickery. "Miller did an outstanding job. He handled the ball well and ran the offense well. He really threw the ball extremely well for not having been back there this year."

Sikeston will travel to play Blytheville's junior varsity next Monday.

KENNETT - The Sikeston 8th grade football team dropped its first game of the year, 26-8 to Kennett's 8th graders on Saturday.

Sikeston's only touchdown came from Acie Dixon on a 3-yard sweep. Ryan Beard provided the two-point conversion.

Kennett quarterback Aaron Taylor scored on touchdown runs from the 10-, 7- and 30-yard lines. B.J. Mitchell had a TD run and Darrius Shaver had a two-point conversion run.

"We didn't play to our potential," said junior high head coach Gary Silverthorn. "We're a better team than what we showed. We had a real good week of practice. But Kennett's quick, big and fast. They came at us and we didn't respond very well."

Sikeston's B team lost to Kennett's B teamers 6-0.

The Sikeston A-team is 1-1 and the B-team is 1-1.

The 8th graders will be back in action on Thursday when they play at Charleston at 6 p.m.
