Kelly blanks Ste. Genevieve

Friday, September 14, 2001

BENTON -- Kelly's softball team improved to 6-0 on Thursday, shutting out Ste. Genevieve 7-0.

"Considering we played Cape yesterday, it was tough for the girls to adjust to a much slower pitcher," explained Kelly coach Melanie Heuring.

Dana Essner threw all seven innings for the Lady Hawks, allowing one hit and no walks with seven strikeouts.

Bridgett Riley paced Kelly's offense, batting 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Ashley Kern was 3-for-3, Cara Scherer was 2-for-3, and Monica Senciboy was 1-for-3.

"Dana threw the ball really well today," said Heuring. "We made some errors, but came through with some big hits. (Riley) hit the ball real well today."

Williams was charged with the loss, and Donze had Ste. Genevieve's only hit.

Kelly will be back in action on Saturday, participating in the Jackson Tournament. The Lady Hawks will face Cor Jesu in the first round at 9:45 a.m.
