CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The football game between Southeast Missouri State University and Southwest Missouri State University will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday at Houck Stadium in Cape Girardeau.
The decision to play the game came after the Ohio Valley Conference announced that member institutions intend to participate in their scheduled athletics contests unless further developments regarding the terrorist acts dictate otherwise.
"This type of decision is difficult and one upon which opinions around the country may vary," said Ohio Valley Conference commissioner Dan Beebe. "Our membership is determined to follow the direction President Bush stated on Wednesday that when he said, 'we will not allow this enemy to win the war by changing our way of life or restricting our freedoms.' In that regard, our institutions are continuing classes and activities, including athletics, while mourning the victims of this horrific event."
There will be special music and a moment of silence observed prior to the start of Saturday night's football game.
Other athletic teams at Southeast besides have had weekend schedules altered. The volleyball team that had a Tuesday night match at Southern Illinois cancelled, was scheduled to play in a two-day tournament at the University of Arkansas.
The Southeast women's soccer team that had a match at Drury cancelled on Tuesday, was scheduled to play at Indiana State on Friday and Indiana on Sunday, but Indiana has cancelled all home events through the weekend. As a result, Southeast will play at Butler on Saturday and at Indiana State on Monday. Both times are set at 4:00 p.m.
