Soccer teams wins, 3-0

Friday, September 14, 2001

KENNETT - The Sikeston soccer team shutout the Kennett Indians on Thursday 3-0 on the road.

Sikeston allowed only five shots on goal. Bulldog goalie Chris Cota made all five saves to record the shutout.

"We played pretty good defense," said Sikeston head coach Derrick Long. "When you hold a team to five shots then you've shut them down. We had a big game from Justin Coffer. He made sure no one got past him -- he's our last line of defense."

Adam Garrett pulled off a hat trick in the game, scoring two assisted goals and one off a penalty kick.

Garrett, Sikeston's all-time leader in career goals, now has nine on the season.

"He's starting to rack up on the goals," said Long. "It helps having Brandon DeWitt and Adam Hahs in the midfield setting him up with the shots. But he's stepping up his all-around game. He's improved in many ways."

Sikeston took the lead at the 24:00 mark when Coffer assisted Garrett on his first goal.

Garrett scored on a penalty kick at the 50:00 mark. He scored his final goal at the 75:00 mark on an assist from Brad Deere.

Sikeston (3-4) attempted 18 shots in all.

"We're just waiting for our offense to explode," said Long. "We've got some good goal scorers but we're not scoring as much as we should."

In junior varsity action, Sikeston won 5-1 to improve to 2-1-1 on the season.

Ross Gelshimer, John Robert Bizzell, Justin Eberhard, Kyle Howard and Lance Rhodes each scored goals. Jordan Dillender had three assists, Rhodes had one and Gelshimer had one.

Sikeston will host West Plains on Monday at 4 p.m.
