SIKESTON - The Sikeston 8th grade football team opened its season with a 12-12 tie to the NMCC 8th graders at Sikeston Public Schools Stadium on Tuesday.
Sikeston had a chance to win the game with 1:20 left but a two-point conversion failed.
"We felt like we had an opportunity, we just had a mix up on the play on the two-point conversion," said Sikeston junior high coach Gary Silverthorn. "We moved the ball well when we had the ball. We were on defense for most of the game. New Madrid's got a real good running back."
NMCC struck first when Terrance Smith scored on a 29-yard run with 4:52 left in the second quarter.
Sikeston answered when Acie Dixon rumbled 21 yards to the one-yard line. That set up quarterback Dustin Allen with a one-yard keeper with 1:20 left in the half to knot the score at 6-6.
NMCC took the lead again in the third quarter when Smith ran for a 44-yard TD to give the Eagles a 12-6 edge.
"Defensively we had a couple of breakdowns," said Silverthorn. "We need to work on our tackling a little bit. Right now we don't know where to go but those are young mistakes."
Sikeston finally tied the score with 1:20 left when Greg Hatchett broke several tackles on his way to a 30-yard score.
Hatchett led Sikeston in rushing with 99 yards on 15 carries. Dixon added 52 yards on four carries while fullback Trey Oetting carried five times for 31 yards.
"We've got some good running backs, but we've got to work on some fundamentals like taking the handoff," said Silverthorn. "We'll get that down and hopefully get better as we go along."
In the B game, Sikeston won 6-0 over NMCC's 7th graders in one half of action. B.J. Green score the only touchdown on a 50-yard run.
