SIKESTON - The deadline to place orders with the Park Division for the 2001 Treebute memorial tree program has been extended to 5 p.m. Oct. 12.
Donors to the program may purchase trees as memorial gifts for a friend or loved one or as a living gift in honor of a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion.
Trees are planted in the Recreation Complex, Roberta Rowe Park and Veterans' Park. The honorees and donors are recognized on a special Treebute map in the Recreation Complex while the honorees in the other parks are recognized with a plaque beside the trees.
In addition, donors and the honorees or their families receive a certificate suitable for framing acknowledging their donated tree.
This year eight varieties of shade trees - southern red oak, white oak, post oak, river birch, green ash, sugar maple, sycamore and fruitless sweetgum - are being offered. The trees are 8-10 feet tall. Prices range from $60 to $100 with $10 going to administrative costs for the program. Bolen Brothers Landscaping is the vendor for this year's program.
Since 1990, 171 trees have been donated to various parks and Allen Boulevard through the Treebute program.
For more information or to order a tree call Jiggs Moore, director of parks and recreation, at 471-6070.
