ST. LOUIS -- The Kelly boys cross country team qualified for the Class 2A state meet by finishing second in the District 1 meet at Jefferson Barracks.
The Hawks, 41 points, finished runnerup to Herculaneum, which finished with 25 points. For the second year in a row, Notre Dame placed third, finishing with 95 points.
Only the top two teams and top 15 individuals qualify for Saturday's state meet at Hough Park in Jefferson City.
Notre Dame did manage to qualify sophomore Ryan Roggow, who placed 11th in 18:29.
Herculaneum freshman Preston Lingo won the 3.1-mile race in 17:34. Kelly's Adam Lofton finished second, six seconds behind Lingo. Kelly also had four other runners in the top 15: Adam Daughhetee (6th, 18:06), Ashley Hahn, (8th, 18:19), Trey Simmons (12th, 18:34) and Lance Scheffer (12th, 18:34). Making the trip to state as part of Kelly's team will be Lance Ferrell (16th, 18:44) and Michael Glastetter (19th, 19:05).
Herculaneum also won the girls competition with 19 points, followed by Hancock (56), Notre Dame (80), St. Pius X (102) and Kelly (111).
Notre Dame qualified two individuals: freshman Megan Rosenquist, who ran a personal-best 22:23 to finish seventh, and junior Sarah Unterreiner (8th, 22:41).
Shannon Lawson of Kelly (14th, 23:30) also qualified for state.
