SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Department of Public Safety has arrested one person for arson in connection with a fire that was started in the holding facility at DPS Monday night.
Ashley Williams, 18, of Sikeston was arrested and charged with first degree arson in the incident. Williams, who was being held on city charges, started the fire in the cell where she and two other inmates were incarcerated.
The investigation showed that Williams had obtained a lighter from another inmate and ignited toilet paper in the cell area. Officers in the building smelled the smoke and after removing the inmates, extinguished the fire.
Williams now faces charges issued by Scott County Prosecutor Cristy Baker-Neel for the arson. Williams is currently being held under $50,000 bond.
