60 years ago

SIKESTON - Sabbath services will be conducted at the Methodist Church Sunday for the first time in 14 weeks, during which the most extensive repairs and improvements made on the property have been undertaken since the building was erected 30 years ago. Improvements and repairs, which now are part of the church, were installed at a cost of more than $16,000. The auditorium, vestibule rooms, rostrum and choir platform have been carpeted with a covering of a two-shaded dark green with mottled design.

SIKESTON - Nominated and elected by acclamation by the Kiwanis Club Tuesday night, Lyman Stevens will be the next president of the Kiwanis Club, succeeding Clint Scott.

SIKESTON - A circus came to town Saturday and several hundred Sikeston children were on hand for the event. The Hippodrome Circus from Florida performed at the Malone Theater with the Sikeston Optimist Club as sponsors. Children in the audience seemed delighted.

SIKESTON - As a result of citizen complaint, the city is seeking to ward off "fly-by-night" salespersons who would operate in Sikeston. City Collector Ann Recker said the city has received various complaints about pressure and harassment techniques employed by the more unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople peddling a wide variety of items. As city collector, she sells merchants licenses to door-to-door peddlers.


PUXICO - Farmer Wayne Cryts says his 1981 crops take precedence over orders to show up in court in Arkansas to explain why he should not be considered in contempt of court for taking grain he believes to belong to him.
