SIKESTON - Charles Dean Butler, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Butler of Sikeston, ranked seventh among 2,180 freshmen who last week took examinations in English as part of the enrollment activities at Central College in Fayette.

CHARLESTON - "I don't remember my topic. I do have my notes somewhere, but it felt right! It felt good! I had answered the call to serve my Lord," recalled Jeffrey Vaughan about his first message to the congregation at Cornerstone General Baptist Church in Bertrand. An attorney for 20 years, the 44-year-old Vaughan now has a new career - the ministry - a choice he will openly acknowledge has brought unmatchable inner peace.


COLUMBIA - The Sikeston Standard Democrat received three awards in the Missouri Press Foundation's 1991 Better Newspaper Contest. Publisher Michael Jensen accepted the second place award for sports coverage and honors for two photographs by photojournalist Timothy Scott on behalf of the staff.Former Standard Democrat Publisher, the late Charles Blanton Jr., was also named to the Newspaper Hall of Fame.
