CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston managed to hold to a 1-0 lead to beat Kennett in the first round of the 1A-3A District Soccer Tournament at Notre Dame Thursday.
Adam Garrett scored his 30th goal of the season at the six minute mark off an Adam Hahs assist, and it turned out to be good enough for the win. Sikeston has defeated Kennett four times this season.
"I don't think we played very well," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long. "We've handled them pretty easily this year. In the first half we had the wind, and I expected to get four or five goals. We got one in the first six minutes, then we just ran dry. It was an ugly win, but we'll take it."
The wind played a major factor in the game, blowing the ball all over the field. Both teams combined for just 12 shots on goal, with Sikeston taking 11, holding Kennett to one.
"In the second half, Kennett had the wind at their back," said Long. "Our defense had to step up, and they did a good job."
Sikeston keeper Chris Cota made one save, while Kennett's goalie made six.
Third-seeded Sikeston will now advance to the semifinals on Saturday to play second-seeded St. Pius at 5:30 p.m.
"It was the first time we've had to play in a wind that strong," said Long. "We just didn't know how to handle ourselves. Hopefully Saturday will be a more pleasant day."
