Wreck kills Charleston man

EAST PRAIRIE - A Charleston man was killed in a two-vehicle accident at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

According to reports, Melvin D. Burney, 40, of East Prairie was traveling west on Missouri Highway 80, three miles east of East Prairie, when his vehicle ran into the rear of a pickup truck driven by Larry Johnson, 54, of Anniston, who was also westbound. Johnson's truck went off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

Edward L. Golightly, 53, of Charleston, who was a passenger in Johnson's vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mississippi County coroner.

Burney sustained minor injuries and Johnson was moderately injured in the accident. Both refused treatment at the scene.
