Sikeston wrestlers win P.B. Tournament

Monday, January 7, 2002

POPLAR BLUFF - The Sikeston wrestling team took first place in the eight-team Poplar Bluff Tournament on Saturday.

Sikeston finished with 150 points, followed by Poplar Bluff (128), Mehlville (113), Dexter (106), North County (97), NMCC (81.5), Riverview Gardens (64) and Poplar Bluff JV (33).

"I'm very pleased with the way we wrestled this weekend," said Sikeston head coach Chris Hodgkiss. "I didn't think we wrestled up to our potential against Cape Central (on Thursday), but I thought the guys wrestled really well on Saturday."

It's the second tournament Sikeston has won this year, also taking first in the Dexter Tournament back in December.

Sikeston had to win a pool at Poplar Bluff before the actual tournament began. They won the pool, then proceeded to win the tournament.

Sikeston won its pool in last year's tournament at Poplar Bluff, but they only took fourth place.

"This tournament had some tougher teams in it, there were some 4A teams in this tournament and a couple of teams from St. Louis," said Hodgkiss. "So for us to win this tournament, that's pretty big. I figured we could win our pool, but to win the whole tournament I thought we'd really have to wrestle well. And we did."

Sikeston got first place finishes out of Kyle Weeks (125 pounds), Cleveland Anthony (130), Scotty Keenan (152) and Scott Heuiser (189).

All four posted perfect 4-0 records in the tournament.

"Scott Heuiser really had a good weekend," said Hodgkiss.

"Kyle Weeks and Scotty Keenan also wrestled really well. I expect a lot out of Cleveland and he wrestled pretty solid too. He did a good job but he wasn't tested that much."

Adam Miller (119), Justin Keller (140), Jackie Cowley (160), Stuart Carraway (215) and Joe Johnson (heavyweight) all competed in the finals but came up short to finish in second place. All finished with 3-1 records in the tournament.

"We had nine guys in the finals going for first place and we went 4-5 in those matches," said Hodgkiss. "It's really nice to get four champions out of this. Last year we only had two."

Other Sikeston wrestlers that placed were 112 class - Cody Ryan (2-2, 4th); 135 class - Cody Weeks (2-2, 5th); 145 class - Tony Reynolds (2-2, 4th).

Sikeston will travel to wrestle at New Madrid County Central on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
