SIKESTON - Sub-zero temperatures came to Sikeston Monday, on the heels of winter's first measurable snowfall. Weather observer Harry Young reported four inches on the gauge.

BLOOMFIELD - The Advance Hornets took the championship of the Bloomfield Invitational Tournament by beating the Indians, 58-57.
PORTAGEVILLE - Among new publications at the New Madrid County Library is "The Best of Dear Abby" by Abigail Van Buren.
The fifth annual Bridge Marathon will be conducted again this year. Money from the $12 per player charge goes to the Heritage House. The marathon has raised more than $1,000 the last four years.
SIKESTON - A total of 10 candidates beat the Tuesday deadline to file for two upcoming vacancies on the City Council. Due to the number of candidates, voters will narrow the field to four in a primary scheduled for March 3. Those who have filed include Larry Tetley, Jack Lopp, Hope Terrell, Jim Hale, Gerald Howard, Bill Blackburn, Josh Bill, Harvey Cooper, Alan Keenan and Mike Moll.
SIKESTON - Some residents celebrated the arrival of 1992 by discharging firearms Tuesday night. Otherwise, Capt. Joe Sebourn of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety calls the activity slow. "We didn't have too many incidents," Sebourn said, "at least, not compared to past New Year's Eves." Area sheriff's departments also reported a quiet New Year's Eve and New Year's Day holiday.
