SIKESTON - Purchase of additional equipment to facilitate serving of hot lunches in the pubic schools was voted by the executive committee in charge of the program at a meeting at the high school building Monday night.

BLOOMFIELD - After playing hide-and-seek with law officers since he escaped from the Stoddard County Jail Sept. 10, 1961, a burglary suspect was apprehended at 5:39 a.m. Sunday by Dunklin County officers as he was trying to escape capture. At the time he broke jail, the man was awaiting trial on the burglary charge.

BENTON - A bond of $350,000 has been set for a rural Sikeston man accused of holding a Western Union operator hostage for 20 hours Monday and Tuesday in Sikeston. Associate Circuit Judge David Mann told The Daily Standard that the 34-year-old man was being held in the Scott County Jail on two counts of kidnaping.

SIKESTON - People wanting to kick the smoking habit can trade their cigarettes for apples, sandwiches or even lottery tickets as part of the American Cancer Society's 15th Annual Great American Smokeout today. The ACS is asking smokers to refrain from smoking for one day.


SIKESTON - Members of the Sikeston Moo Sul Kwan Martial Arts Institute recently attended Tae Kwon Do tournaments in St. Louis and Cape Girardeau. The students competed in a wide field of events ranging from Form to Board Breaking to Free Sparring.


SIKESTON - Henry Meldrum Post 114 of the American Legion is supporting the Cancer Screening Center and the new Cardiac Cath Center at Missouri Delta Medical Center with a $1,000 gift to the MDMC Foundation.
